AviClear acne laser

What Is AviClear and Why Does It Matter?

If you have been living with stubborn acne and feel like you have tried everything — prescription creams, antibiotics, even the thought of Accutane — you are not alone. Acne affects roughly 50 million Americans each year, and for many, it is far more than a cosmetic concern. It impacts confidence, relationships, career decisions, and daily quality of life.

AviClear is the first and only FDA-cleared laser specifically designed for the treatment of mild to severe inflammatory acne vulgaris. Developed by Cutera and cleared by the FDA in March 2022, AviClear uses a targeted 1726 nm wavelength to suppress the sebaceous (oil) glands that are a primary driver of breakouts — treating acne at its source rather than managing symptoms on the surface.

At Harmony Aesthetics Spa, I offer AviClear as part of a physician-supervised approach to acne and acne scarring for teens and adults across Spring, Klein, The Woodlands, and the greater North Houston area. This is not a one-size-fits-all treatment — it is a decision I make with each patient based on their acne severity, health history, skin type, lifestyle, and goals.

How AviClear Works: The Science Behind the 1726 nm Laser

One of the primary causes of acne is overproduction of sebum by the sebaceous glands. When excess oil combines with dead skin cells, it clogs pores, which leads to inflammation, bacteria growth, and breakouts.

Most acne treatments — topical retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, antibiotics, even Accutane — target the downstream effects of acne (bacteria, inflammation, skin cell turnover). AviClear takes a different approach. Its 1726 nm wavelength is selectively absorbed by the lipids and water within the sebaceous glands through a process called selective photothermolysis. The laser delivers controlled thermal energy that reduces the size and activity of these glands, decreasing sebum production at the source.

Published research by Goldberg et al. in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology (2023) confirmed that the 1726 nm wavelength achieves selective destruction of sebaceous gland tissue while sparing the surrounding epidermis and follicular structures. Histological analysis showed total necrosis of the targeted glands with complete preservation of surrounding skin.

The device also incorporates AviCool™ sapphire contact cooling, which continuously regulates skin temperature during treatment. This makes the experience safer and more comfortable — most patients describe the sensation as a quick snapping feeling, similar to a light rubber band snap.

For a broader look at how laser therapies are reshaping acne treatment, this review of emerging laser and light-based therapies in acne management provides a helpful overview of the 1726 nm laser class.

AviClear vs. Accutane: An Honest Comparison

This is the comparison most of my patients ask about — and it deserves an honest, side-by-side answer. Both AviClear and Accutane (isotretinoin) can produce meaningful acne clearance, but they work in fundamentally different ways and carry very different risk profiles.

Side-by-Side Comparison

Factor AviClear Laser Accutane (Isotretinoin)
How it works Laser energy targets and suppresses sebaceous glands Oral retinoid that shrinks oil glands systemically
FDA status FDA-cleared for mild to severe inflammatory acne FDA-approved for severe recalcitrant nodular acne
Treatment protocol 3 sessions, ~30 min each, spaced 4–6 weeks apart Daily oral medication for 4–6 months
Systemic side effects None (localized treatment only) Possible: dry skin/lips, mood changes, liver enzyme elevation, birth defects (requires iPLEDGE)
Lab monitoring Not required Monthly bloodwork required
Pregnancy restrictions Cannot be treated if pregnant Strict contraception required; pregnancy testing mandatory
Downtime Minimal — mild redness for hours to 1–2 days None from treatment itself, but side effects are ongoing
Results timeline Progressive improvement over 3–12 months after series Clearing typically begins 2–3 months into course
Long-term durability Clinical data shows continued improvement at 12+ months High long-term clearance but relapse possible
Safe for all skin types Yes Yes
Drug interactions None Multiple (vitamin A, tetracyclines, others)

Neither option is universally “better.” Accutane remains an important tool for severe, treatment-resistant acne — and I will recommend it when clinically appropriate. But for patients who want effective acne clearance without systemic medication, the lab work, the mood-related concerns, or the iPLEDGE requirements, AviClear offers a well-studied, physician-guided alternative.

What Types of Acne Does AviClear Treat?

AviClear is FDA-cleared for mild, moderate, and severe inflammatory acne vulgaris. In clinical practice, I have seen it work well across several acne presentations:

Inflammatory acne — red, swollen papules and pustules driven by excess oil and bacterial activity. This is AviClear’s primary indication.

Hormonal acne — common in teens, young women, and patients experiencing perimenopause. Because AviClear reduces oil production at the gland level, it can be effective regardless of the hormonal trigger driving the excess sebum.

Cystic acne — deep, painful nodules and cysts. AviClear can be part of a treatment plan for cystic acne, though severe cases may also benefit from complementary interventions.

Persistent adult acne — many adults in their 30s, 40s, and beyond deal with breakouts that do not respond to topical products. AviClear targets the underlying oil overproduction that topicals cannot address.

AviClear is also safe and effective for all skin types and tones. Unlike some older laser platforms that target melanin and carry a risk of hyperpigmentation in darker skin, the 1726 nm wavelength targets the lipid-rich sebaceous gland specifically, making it inclusive across the Fitzpatrick skin type scale.

Important: AviClear does not directly treat existing acne scars. However, by clearing active acne and preventing future breakouts, it helps stop new scarring from forming. For patients with existing acne scars, I often recommend complementary treatments such as microneedling or chemical peels alongside AviClear.

What to Expect During Your AviClear Sessions in Spring, TX

Knowing what happens at each step helps ease anxiety — especially for first-time laser patients and teens. Here is a clear walkthrough of the AviClear process at our Spring, TX clinic.

Before Your First Session

During your initial consultation, I will review your acne history, current medications, overall health, skin type, and treatment goals. We will discuss whether AviClear, another approach, or a combination strategy is the best fit. If AviClear is appropriate, we will schedule your series.

In the days before treatment, avoid anything that could irritate your skin: aggressive exfoliants, retinol, glycolic acid, or excessive sun exposure. Come to your appointment with clean, makeup-free skin if possible.

During Treatment (Sessions 1, 2, and 3)

Each session takes approximately 30 minutes. The AviClear handpiece is applied directly to the acne-affected areas of your face. The AviCool™ sapphire window keeps your skin at a controlled temperature throughout, which helps manage comfort without the need for injectable anesthesia.

Most patients rate the sensation around a 3 out of 10 — a quick, repeated snapping feeling. No numbing cream is required in most cases, though we can discuss comfort options for sensitive patients.

Sessions are spaced approximately 4 to 6 weeks apart, so the full treatment series is completed in roughly 2 to 3 months.

After Each Session

You may experience mild redness, slight swelling, or skin sensitivity similar to a mild sunburn. These effects typically resolve within a few hours to two days. A temporary acne flare-up is also normal — this occurs as the sebaceous glands respond to the treatment and is a sign the laser is working. These flares diminish with each subsequent session.

Aftercare essentials:

  • Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen daily throughout your treatment series
  • Avoid retinol, glycolic acid, and salicylic acid for approximately one week post-treatment
  • Use medical-grade, non-comedogenic skincare as directed
  • You may wear makeup the day after treatment
  • You can return to work, school, and normal activities immediately — no downtime required

AviClear Results: Timeline and Clinical Evidence

Understanding realistic expectations is essential. AviClear results are progressive — not instant — and they continue to improve for months after your final session.

Clinical Evidence

Data from Cutera’s FDA-clearance studies and published research show:

  • At 6 months after the final session: 90% of patients showed a visible reduction in acne, and 87% achieved at least a 50% decrease in inflammatory acne lesions.
  • At 12 months: 92% of patients reported continued improvement. A study using the Investigator Global Assessment (IGA) scale found that 93% achieved IGA 1+ improvement, 79% achieved IGA 2+ improvement, and 68% were clear or almost clear at 12 months.
  • Breakout episodes: Clinical trials demonstrated that post-treatment breakouts are shorter, less intense, and less frequent compared to pre-treatment.

These findings come from peer-reviewed research published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology (Goldberg et al., 2023) and the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (Alexiades et al., 2023), as well as data reported through Skin Therapy Letter.

Realistic Patient Timeline

Timeframe What You May Notice
During treatment series (Weeks 1–12) Temporary flares after each session, then gradual clearing between sessions
1–3 months after final session Visible reduction in new breakouts; skin feels less oily
3–6 months after Significant improvement — fewer, milder, shorter breakouts
6–12 months after Optimal results — most patients report the best clearance of their lives
12+ months Results continue to hold; a single maintenance session may be recommended if needed

Results are considered semi-permanent. Many patients maintain their improvement for years. If breakouts return over time, a single touch-up session may be recommended — not a full repeat of the three-session series.

Side Effects, Safety, and Who Should Not Get AviClear

Safety is always my first consideration. AviClear has a strong safety profile based on multiple clinical trials involving over 180 patients, with all reported side effects being transient and self-resolving.

Common Side Effects (Temporary)

  • Mild redness and warmth (resolves within hours to 2 days)
  • Slight swelling or sensitivity in the treatment area
  • Temporary acne flare-up (usually 1–2 weeks post-session, decreasing with each treatment)
  • Temporary skin dryness

Rare but Possible Side Effects

Per Cutera’s official safety information: blisters, crusting or scabbing, hyperpigmentation, skin texture changes, infection, scarring, hypopigmentation, and altered hair growth have been reported, though they are uncommon.

Contraindications — Who Should NOT Get AviClear

AviClear is contraindicated for:

  • Patients who are pregnant
  • Patients currently undergoing treatment for skin cancer

Precautions — Discuss with Your Provider First

AviClear should be used with caution if you have any of the following. I will review each of these during your consultation:

  • Current or recent use of isotretinoin (Accutane)
  • Current or recent use of anticoagulants (blood thinners)
  • Inflammatory skin conditions other than acne in the treatment area (including rosacea)
  • History of malignant tumors in the treatment area
  • History of keloids or hypertrophic scarring
  • History of vitiligo or pigmentary disorders
  • History of herpes simplex (antiviral pre-treatment may be indicated)
  • Open lesions, wounds, or active skin infections
  • Metal or electronic implants in or near the treatment area

Note: AviClear has not been studied on the lips, eyelids, or eyebrows. Treatment is performed on intact facial skin only.

This safety information is sourced directly from Cutera’s official AviClear product page. I share it transparently because informed patients make better decisions — and because physician oversight during candidacy evaluation is what separates safe, effective treatment from risky guesswork.

Complementary Acne Treatments We Offer

AviClear is a powerful standalone treatment, but acne care works best when it is part of a comprehensive plan. Depending on your skin’s needs, I may recommend combining AviClear with one or more of the following services available at Harmony Aesthetics Spa:

Laser Genesis — Included in every AviClear package at our clinic (three complementary Laser Genesis sessions). This gentle, non-invasive laser stimulates collagen production, reduces redness, and improves overall skin texture and tone.

Microneedling with PRP or Hyaluronic Acid — Excellent for addressing existing acne scars after active breakouts are controlled. Microneedling triggers the skin’s natural repair process for smoother, more even texture.

Chemical Peels — Medical-grade peels help accelerate cell turnover, unclog pores, and improve post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Detox Acne Facial — A professional-grade facial treatment designed specifically for acne-prone skin, combining deep cleansing, extractions, and targeted treatment serums.

Medical-Grade Skincare — I provide personalized skincare recommendations to maintain your results at home between and after treatments.

For teens and young adults specifically, our teen acne treatment program provides age-appropriate guidance and treatment planning.

Why Physician-Led Acne Care Matters

Not every medspa that offers AviClear has a physician directing patient care. This distinction matters — especially for acne, which is a medical condition with underlying causes that vary from patient to patient.

As a board-certified family physician with a Fellowship in Obesity Medicine, I evaluate your acne within the context of your whole health picture. Hormonal imbalances, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), insulin resistance, medication side effects, and stress all contribute to acne. Treating the skin without understanding what is driving the breakouts is incomplete care.

At Harmony Aesthetics Spa, I personally assess every AviClear candidate. If AviClear is not the right fit — or if you would benefit from a different approach — I will tell you. I also coordinate with local healthcare resources, including Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital, for patients with complex medical histories that require additional support.

This is what physician-led means at our practice: your safety and your results come first, always.

What Our Patients Say

Our community in Spring and The Woodlands recognizes this approach. As one patient shared in a Google review: “Always willing to take the time to answer all my questions and explain everything.” That philosophy guides every consultation — whether we are discussing acne, weight management, or hormone health.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does AviClear compare to Accutane for treating acne?

AviClear is a non-drug, laser-based approach that targets oil glands directly through the skin’s surface. Accutane is a systemic oral medication that works throughout the body and requires monthly lab monitoring. Clinical data shows both can achieve significant acne clearance, but AviClear avoids the systemic side effects, liver monitoring, and strict pregnancy restrictions associated with isotretinoin. The best option depends on your acne severity, health history, and personal preferences — which is why I evaluate each patient individually.

Is AviClear safe for teens?

Yes. AviClear is FDA-cleared for mild to severe inflammatory acne and is not restricted by age. I regularly treat teens and young adults at our Spring, TX clinic. For patients under 18, I involve parents or guardians in the consultation process and discuss realistic expectations, aftercare, and whether AviClear is the best first-line option for their specific situation.

How long do AviClear results last?

Clinical studies show continued improvement at 12 months after the final session, with 92% of patients reporting better skin at that point. Results are considered semi-permanent — many patients maintain their improvement for years. If breakouts gradually return, a single maintenance session (not a full re-treatment) is typically sufficient.

What does AviClear feel like? Is it painful?

Most patients describe the sensation as a quick snapping or light crackling feeling. On a 10-point scale, patients commonly report a 3. The built-in AviCool™ sapphire cooling system keeps skin temperature controlled throughout. In clinical trials, no patients required pain medication before, during, or after treatment.

Can I wear makeup after AviClear?

Yes. You can apply non-comedogenic makeup the day after your session. I recommend using gentle, medical-grade products and avoiding active ingredients (retinol, glycolic acid, salicylic acid) for approximately one week post-treatment.

Does AviClear work on all skin types and tones?

Yes. Unlike some older laser systems that target melanin and carry a higher risk for patients with darker skin, AviClear’s 1726 nm wavelength targets the sebaceous glands specifically. This makes it safe and effective across all skin types and tones, including Fitzpatrick types IV through VI.

Will AviClear remove my existing acne scars?

AviClear does not treat existing scars, but by clearing active acne and preventing new breakouts, it stops new scarring from forming. For existing scars, I typically recommend microneedling, chemical peels, or Laser Genesis — which are treatments we can layer into your plan.

Does insurance cover AviClear?

AviClear is classified as a cosmetic procedure and is not covered by insurance. It may be eligible for HSA or FSA funds. We offer financing through Cherry to help make treatment affordable.

Where can I get AviClear in the Spring, TX area?

You can receive AviClear at Harmony Aesthetics Spa in Spring, TX. We serve patients from throughout the area, including Klein, The Woodlands, Cypress, Tomball, and the greater North Houston region. To schedule your free consultation, contact us here or call (346) 597-1202.

What makes Harmony Aesthetics Spa different from other clinics offering AviClear?

At Harmony Aesthetics Spa, your care is led by a board-certified physician — not delegated to unsupervised technicians. Your AviClear package also includes three complementary Laser Genesis sessions and ongoing aftercare support.
